What are the different awards in Æthelmearc?
You can find all the Kingdom award names, heraldic badges, and descriptions on the Æthelmearc Heraldry Site.
What is the difference between a Award of Arms, Grant of Arms, and Patent of Arms?
The Awards of Merit are the first level of armergerious awards in SCA. these allow the bearer to bestow a title of Lady, Lord, or Noble and to display their device as arms. If the bearer does not already have an Award of Arms, being awarded a Golden Alce, Golden Mirror, Golden Stirrup, Hearth Guide, Keystone, or Sycamore will also come with an AoA.
The Awards of High Merit are the intermediate level of armergerious awards in SCA. These allow the bearer to bestow a title of Ladyship, Lordship, or Nobleship (or The Honorable Lady, Lord, or Noble). If the bearer does not already have a Grant of Arms, being awarded a Fleur d’Æthelmearc, Gage, Golden Lance, Millrind, Scarlet Battery, Scarlet Guard, White Horn, or White Scarf will also come with an GoA.
The highest armergerious awards are the Peerage Orders. These allow the bearer to bestow a title of Mistress, Master, or a Gender Neutral term of their choosing. If the bearer does not already have a Patent of Arms, being awarded a Pelican, Laurel, Chivalry, Mark, or Master of Defense will also come with an PoA.
Recipient Information
- If you have received a scroll, please take care of it. It will have come in a scroll case. Until you have had it framed, please leave it in the case to keep it safe. Once the scroll has been framed, then feel free to return the case to either the Sylvan Signet or your local Scribal Guild Minister.
- If there are special care instructions, the scribe will have included them with the scroll.
- All scrolls should be hung out of direct sunlight.
- A lot of time (and the scribes personal funds to purchase supplies) go into each scroll. Please treat it with respect. And if you are so inclined, a thank you either in person or note is always appreciated.

Beginner Scribe Information
- If you need to reach our New Scribes Deputy, please email newscribes@aethelmearc.org. They are there to advise, refer you to people who can help teach you what you’d like to learn, and connect you to your local Scribal Guilds.
- If you are a new scribe, you’ll want to read through the Sylvan Signet Policies and download a copy of the Red Book (the Signet reference guide).
- To get started, you can work on your own but going to your local (or near by group) scribes meeting is even better. This way, you have people that can help you put together your kit of supplies and answer questions. You can also get your first assignments.
- There are a lot of experiences, talented scribes in our Kingdom. They teach classes throughout the whole year and our Scribal University at Pennsic is renowned throughout the entire Known World. Many of them are also willing to work with people one on one.
